Dinosaurs and Yoga: A calming experience

You have to love the internet and all the goodies out there waiting to be found. My husband came across this version of the Jurassic Park theme song that I’ve been playing in my classes this past week. John Williams’ original score has been slowed down 1000 times. The result is an incredible piece of classical music that is soothing and grounding.

Opening to Grace

Another great workshop this past weekend, Annie Stocker opened our practice to the stability and joyful freedom of Anusara Yoga. Annie is from Seattle and the owner of Two Dog Yoga.

Anusara is a fairly new school of hatha yoga, started in 1997 by John Friend. There are five Universal Principles to Alignment to take with you into your asana practice. I like how this practice really integrates every part of the body, bringing awareness to how the body is interconnected and working as a whole.

The Anusara Invocation

Universal Principles of Alignment

1. Opening to Grace (Air) – Being represented by the nature element of air, grace is all around us. Lead with your heart and grace will be present.

2. Muscular Energy (Earth) – The awareness of the energy and strength in the body through the use of the muscle tissue.

3. Inner Spiral (Water) – Drawing to the centre, to the source, this is an expanding spiral. Pressing out through the ball of the big toe rotates the legs inward, widening the thighs and pelvis.

4. Outer Spiral (Fire) – Coming into play in back bends. Rotating legs outward, thighs and pelvis draw together.

5. Organic Energy (Space) – This element is beyond air, radiating everywhere. This is where expansion, flexibility and freedom come to the pose.

During asana practice we are looking for a balance between the principles. Noticing which elements come to you every easily and others that do not and work with bring the strength to the weaker elements. In the process finding the space or organic energy.

Guadalajaran Swiss Chard Quesadillas

I’m trying to include chard into our regular diet, my husband loves it and I was afraid to cook with it. Fear no more, thanks to this quesadilla.

What a pleasant surprise. The filling seems really light compared to the regular chicken, cheese and vegetable quesadillas I make, but turned out to be very filling and flavourful. The recipe says this will make four quesadillas, I only made 2 and used all the filling. Here is the recipe…or click HERE for a printable version from Vegetarian Times. Enjoy!

2 T vegetable oil
1 small onion, chopped (3/4 cup)
2 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 t)
1 jalapeño or serrano chile, minced
1/4 t cumin seeds
1/8 t Mexican oregano
1/4 C tequila (I used Aloe Vera Juice)
12 oz. Swiss chard, trimmed
8 6-inch corn tortillas
1 cup grated reduced-fat Monterey Jack cheese

Directions

1. Heat oil in pot over medium heat. Add onion, and sauté 5 minutes, or until golden. Stir in garlic, chile, cumin and oregano, and sauté 2 minutes. Add tequila, and simmer 1 minute, or until liquid has evaporated. Stir in chard. Cover, reduce heat to medium low, and steam 5 minutes, or until chard wilts. Uncover, and cook 3 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated.

2. Place 1 tortilla in skillet over medium heat. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup cheese. Top with 1/4 chard mixture and second tortilla. Cook 2 minutes per side, or until browned. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Slice into wedges; serve.

Study shows: Yoga is a happiness helper

Researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine investigated whether yoga or walking made people happier…and yoga won!

They found people who did an hour of yoga three times a week reported being happier and less anxious than those who did light walking for the same amount of time. And the science backed them up: The yoga types had higher levels of mood-boosting chemicals in their brains as well.
